Curriculum Statement

Our curriculum is built around our children. At Herstmonceux School we teach our 'Challenge Curriculum' that includes the National Curriculum which sets out the the most important knowledge and skills that every child has a right to learn.

Underpinning the skills, knowledge and competencies that we teach in each of the subject areas are the core elements of our school curriculum, which underpin our beliefs and communicate the ethos of our school.  Children develop a strong sense of moral purpose, become well rounded, empathetic young people who have a thirst for learning and respect for all around them.

Learning is always exciting and in a meaningful context for children.Teaching is driven by methodical curriculum design, with units of work that focus in depth on key topics.  Lesson and resources are crafted carefully to foster deep conceptual and procedural knowledge.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage in our Reception class and we teach the National Curriculum programmes of study in KS1 and KS2. This teaching is enhanced with various interactive learning programmes, eg phonics bug, espresso and mymaths. Specialist teachers and coaches provide opportunities for all pupils in music and sport, including singing, recorder, cricket, rugby and gymnastics.

Our curriculum is further enhanced by rigorous and well planned Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education (SMSC).
We teach the East Sussex programme of study for PSHE, supported by SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) materials and and e-safety programme.
