Welcome to Sycamore Class
Our staff are Mrs Beckett, Mrs Peirson and Mrs Pavitt.
Welcome to Year 6 – the final year at primary school! We’re looking forward to an exciting and rewarding year ahead. Year 6 can be hard work but also incredibly rewarding and great fun. We plan to provide a varied and stimulating curriculum through which we can also prepare the children for their SATs in May. We are committed to helping every child reach their potential and achieve as well as possible in their final year.
Our topic this term is called ‘Survival’. In Science we will be learning about adaptation and studying Darwin’s theory of evolution and inheritance. We will read the book Moth by Isabel Thomas which narrates the story of moth adaptation during the Industrial Revolution. Linked to this in DT, we will create 3D moths.
Our class text ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar follows the plight of a young boy as he learns to survive in a Texan detention camp. (Please do not let your child watch the film.)
Our geography topic focuses on rivers and land formation and we are planning a trip to Cuckmere to support our learning on rivers and habitats. In Art we will do a project on the work of artist Eric Ravilious who is known for his watercolour pieces of the South Downs.
In RE, we will be learning about Creationism vs Evolution and whether it is complimentary or conflicting. We will also be having bi-weekly Philosophy sessions focused using a variety of stimuli.
For the first two weeks, we will do a mini-project about the history of Herstmonceux. We have a local historian visiting and a walk to the church planned for the second week.
